National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)

Achieving a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) with Busec

What is an NVQ?

NVQs are qualifications based on standards of good practice that have been devised by people from a wide variety of occupations.  The qualifications are competence based.  This means that NVQs are suitable for anyone who has relevant practical experience and knowledge of a subject and who can provide evidence that they can perform a range of appropriate activities in the workplace.

There are various levels of NVQ to suit all types of jobs.  The levels range from level 2 e.g. Team Leader to level 5 Strategic Manager.  For example an NVQ level 3 in Learning & Development.

Successful businesses increasingly require flexibility from their employees; they are expected to participate in new initiatives, learn new skills and utilise these in parallel with their core responsibilities.  Examples include designing and delivering presentations, facilitating at internal training courses or being a coach or mentor to junior staff.  First line managers are often promoted into the role based on their functional expertise and may need to develop their competence to successfully lead their team.

In all the above examples NVQs can be used to:

  • develop the individual and give them confidence
  • enable the business to measure competence and ensure that work is being performed a national standard.  Follow up and support formal training, enabling the organisation to measure how well the learning has been transferred in the workplace
  • Reward and motivate employees by recognising their contribution.

I think the organisation is very professional and I'm glad I put my learning through Busec as they genuinely care

What is available?

Busec Ltd can offer CIPD NVQ Levels 3, 4 and 5 in:

Management & Leadership

  • Opportunities to develop the core management competences from junior level through to strategic or senior operational level

Learning and Development

  • A wide range of NVQs appropriate for individuals supporting, managing or leading the L&D function
  • Assessor and Verifier Awards - qualifications in their own right for people who assess others
  • Certificates and Awards supporting specific specialist subject such as training, coaching, mentoring
  • Government funded work-based learning
  • Basic skills.

It is appreciated that not all candidates wish to undertake a full NVQ, or one of the set Certificate programmes designed by CIPD.  In these circumstances they can choose a "cluster" of units and achieve a certificate to show competence in these areas.  These units can be "banked" and added to at a later date enabling the person to achieve the full NVQ, if they so wish.  This approach enables the employee to develop their competence, appropriate to their work experience and reduces costs for the employer.

How will it work?

A member of the Busec team will respond to your initial enquiry and will outline the qualification for you, explain the process and answer any questions.  The next stage will be to meet for a diagnostic interview; this does not incur any cost or commitment but is part of the fact finding process and will enable an adviser to map your experience to the NVQ standards and give you personal advice about your best options.

When you are ready to go ahead you will meet with your Lead Assessor for a start up meeting when you will complete the NVQ registration form so that Busec can arrange for the CIPD to register you on the programme.  Your Lead Assessor will help you to prepare and present your evidence to support your claim to competence.  You would probably meet about once a month and in between meetings they would give you feedback to your work by email or telephone.

For an inclusive price Busec offers:

  • Response to your initial enquiry within 2 working days
  • A free diagnostic meeting, prior to commitment to discuss which subject and level is most appropriate for you
  • Opportunity to join CIPD as an Affiliate member
  • Regular one-to-one meetings with your lead assessor, at your place of work if desired
  • Prompt and constructive feedback to work submitted between meetings
  • Comprehensive guidance notes
  • A CIPD certificate on completion (some awards also lead to Associate or Licentiate membership)

"If they coud all be like Jane Church then everyone would acheive an NVQ!"
